氣卷雲烟漫滄海
余之緣石,因藉以寄筆墨,初因畫得石,後因石得畫,以至抱一拳為深山,窺一孔為桃源,與襄陽同癖矣。石可亡國,見之廟堂;石亦承道,存乎齋室。道,或存乎器,是器可識,而道不可言也。譬如古人插花,不言花道而曰瓶花。瓶者,器也,以納新,以存道。石亦與之近也,石不言玩,而曰供、曰養。供者石也,養者道也。

石為岩骨,大地之內核,故能與人同化。石緣發見採集而入齋室,修治滌塵而全形神,吟詠題刻而寄精神,配飾底座而彰其位。發見採集即相石也,相石貴乎識見,析石理、斷古今、判高下是為鑒,寄遊觀、棲閒心、發幽思是謂賞。相石有妙訣而無定法,而貴乎氣質相投,是謂瘦皺漏透各臻其妙,清朗潤和自得其趣。修治因有石瑕,乃輔助之功。古人有輕其不天成者,余以為應因技而論之,劣工固然敗石,若借妙手,則添錦花。修治貴順勢而為,蓋心通造化,手下必生自然。

譬如盆栽,纏繞扭曲只是為病,剪裁縮放乃正法。剪裁需辨花木生長之理,然後依理而下,如此方造真境,能為大匠。吟詠題刻,因寄精神,得宜最難,題須辭雅書妙、刻必工巧技絕。若石玲瓏無暇、面面俱景者,可書刻於座中,所謂“石無款而不文”,非止于石上者也。石座初以穩固設之,久而為飾。座,位也。石因座而彰位,因座而全神,座可為托花之葉,亦為存道之器。然有奇物天成,如毋假修治、不拘束縛之傲岸者,則不可削足而就履,器雖可存道,而一味執器,道毀矣

格物盡理,或近乎道,若以此格今之所謂道者,恐多東海泊來之意,故借石以說,作齊東鄉野之辯。
